This year’s title is for the exhibition at Norfolk Makers Festival 2024 is “Under the Surface”. I can think of many interpretations. Sadly, my two submissions have not been accepted by the panel. I’ve been fortunate up till now.

This is:
“GEO-PHYS”
A geophysical survey is used to map contrasts between the physical properties of buried archaeological remains and the surrounding soil to guide where best to dig. Here ground penetrating radar images of the Roman encampment at Brancaster have been interpreted as a printed background after computer manipulation and with paint and stitch fabric blocks. Straight lines and right angles are the predominate feature, thus simple stitches are employed.
“FOUND IN RIVERS”
Goes back to my fascination with Celtic archaeological finds and imagery that I have used in previous works.
Altered imagery from ancient Celtic Shields, possibly Votive offerings, found in rivers of England are depicted diving ever deeper just as archaeologists search beneath the ground surface to unearth ancient artifacts and reveal history. The Battersea shield, found in the Thames, is dated circa 350–50 BC, the Wandsworth shield, also from the Thames, 300-200 BC and the Witham shield, from Lincolnshire 300-200 BC.
